and Germs

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is one of the most beneficial and necessary vitamins for your Immune system. In some cases, an immune deficiency can actually be caused simply by a deficiency in vitamin A. Studies run in third-world countries have shown, without a doubt, that the administration of Vitamin A to malnourished children protects them against measles, and significantly drops the death rate from the infection. Vitamin A enhances your white blood cell function, but more than that, it reinforces your natural defenses against infection- your skin and your inner linings.

Vitamin b6

The B vitamins actually work together- this why they’re commonly known as the B complex. B6, however, is particularly important for immune function. It is also very commonly deficient in young women and teenage girls who are most likely to dieting. Eating a lot of sugars and refined foods also contributes to the problem. Being low in B6 for too long leads to poor white blood cell response and even worse, it can shrink the Thymus- a little known organ that is critical to the function of your immune system.

Vitamin b12

B12 is the second part of the complex. Although B6 is considered more important, it is B12 that allows blood cells to divide and multiply when they need to the most- when you’re sick. Without adequate B12 in your system, white blood cells in particular cannot mature at all- leaving you virtually defenseless should you get sick.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most critical vitamins there is, not only for our immune systems but for our health in general. Anyone who has studied history at all has heard of Scurvy- an old illness, common in sailors and those who didn’t have varied enough diets. This was actually a deficiency in vitamin C, and it killed a great many people before the cause and cure was discovered. Eating a varied diet with a multivitamin is enough to keep it away in the modern age.

Vitamin D

Known as the sunshine vitamin, D is essential to bone growth, immune function, and many other aspects of the human body. Being low on Vitamin D is such a common problem that it could almost be described as a trend. More than 40 percent of the people in the world are deficient. Most people get their vitamin D from the sun- but in colder countries, where winters are long and the sun is not a common sight, this is almost impossible. Even people who get sun are sometimes deficient. Having a great multivitamin with D included is often the best way to make sure you’re getting enough.

Selenium is an immune system super hero. It has been proven that higher levels of Selenium in the system of AIDS patients accounts for a higher survival rate, and also that it helps protect the heart against damage should someone contract CMV. These days, researchers believe that selenium deficiency may allow viruses and infections to mutate and take hold. When you have enough in your system, it not only protects you but works hard alongside your natural antioxidants to keep you young and healthy, longer.

Iron helps your blood cells carry oxygen to all the parts of your body. For this reason, it’s a double whammy when it comes to immunity-  being low on iron is a bad idea, because it paralyzes your immune response. Being too high in Iron is also a bad idea, because part of your immune system’s natural response to infection is to attempt to starve the infected cells of iron (and therefore oxygen.) That is why it’s so important to choose a balanced supplement.

Echinacea root

Echinacea has been used since ancient times as a cure for colds, viral infections, and the like. Recent studies have proven that the ancient herb raises your white blood cell levels. This allows you to fight off sickness and infections faster, and to get back to yourself. However, taking too much at once can result in a stomach ache or allergic reaction- so if you’re taking a supplement containing Echinacea, don’t drink the common tea.

Elderberry extract

Elderberries are a well known, ancient superfood that has been credited with helping people to live long and healthy lives. In times when it was common for people to die at 50, people were reportedly living into their eighties when these powerhouse berries were part of their everyday diet.  These days, you can buy them processed as jam or juice- or go the smart route, and go with a supplement that will pack all of their benefit without all of the sugar.

Blueberry extract

Blueberries are a well known source of Antioxidants. The actual name of the antioxidant that is so important is pterostilbene, and it works along with the Vitamin D that is also present in this supplement to dramatically boost the immune system. Together, they boost the human CAMP gene, which is closely involved in our immune systems. On top of that, blueberries have been shown to boost brain power because they also contain polyphenols, another type of antioxidant that helps the brain carry out “Housekeeping” tasks, like storing memories and other processes that happen when you sleep.

Shitaki mushroom extract

Shitaki Mushrooms are a well known immune booster, and gained recent popularity not only for their medical benefits but for their fantastic taste. The mushrooms have a perfect balance of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that improves cell function and even improves natural gut immunities. On top of that, there has also been a scientifically recorded reduction of inflammation due to the consumption of these little mushrooms.

Ginger root extract

Ginger is well known as a treatment for the common cold, flu, or any other illness that keeps you in bed for days. This is because ginger is not only a potent antioxidant of its own right, but also because it has strong anti inflammatory properties. So when your nose is stuffed up, or you're having trouble breathing, Ginger can bring the swelling that’s causing it down and solve the problem. But more than that, having a bit of ginger in your diet or supplement can help kick out any nasties that come along before they have a chance to take hold- and keep you feeling fantastic in the meantime.

Cinnamon extract

Cinnamon extract has been shown to boost the immune system with its antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Cinnamon has been used in medicine for centuries to treat not only immune problems, but also skin disorders, respiratory problems, heart problems and even diabetes! Keeping cinnamon as a constant part of your diet- instead of only having it with your pumpkin latte- will keep your immune system humming along nicely.

Cayenne pepper extract

Cayenne pepper is a spicy, red pepper that is usually sold in powder form. It’s included in chili powder, curry powder, and many other spices and forms of cuisine- much to the advantage of the cultures in which it is found. The active ingredient, capsicum is known as one of the best natural inflammation relievers available to man, as well as containing much of the vitamins and antioxidants we require for life.

Aloe Vera extract

Aloe vera is another potent anti inflammatory, but on top of that, it is almost a complete food. It contains vitamins A, B, C, and E all of which work in the body as antioxidants. When introduced as a supplement, Aloe Vera actually absorbs toxins it finds in the body as it is being digested and pulls them out with it as waste- helping you get back on your feet faster when you’ve had an illness, as well as helping to eliminate problems as they come up.

Pumpkin seed extract

Pumpkin seeds are a great source of Zinc which not only impacts your immunities but also cell growth and division, sleep, and all of your senses. Without an adequate amount of zinc in our bodies, most people are unable to adequately carry out the most basic of tasks, like keeping enough white blood cells to protect yourself or getting enough sleep to keep yourself going. On top of this, however, they are also high in phytoestrogens which help to bring down your blood pressure, reduces headaches, and raises your good cholesterol while lowering the bad.

Garlic extract

Garlic is good for more than just pizza. Ancient writings show that it was used way back as an aphrodisiac in India and even as a currency in Egypt. And it’s easy to see why- one clove contains 12 mg of potassium, 5 mg of calcium, and more than 100 sulfuric componds and antioxidants. Garlic also lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, making it great for your heart. On top of all that, it is and was used to naturally kill parasites in the body and to prevent serious infection. In both of the world wars, for example, it was used in the field and at home to prevent gangrene.
